Fifteen reproductive, 22 vegetative and 21 agronomic descriptors were evaluated, the agronomic ones comprised seven descriptors for annual, winter and summer evaluations, respectively, with the objective to select the most appropriate descriptors for characterization of Paspalum guenoarum and Paspalum plicatulum. Principal components analysis was used to discard redundante or non-discriminative descriptors. The principal component analysis allowed a reduction of 53, 68 and 43%, respectively, in the number of initial descriptors considered. By means of this technique, it was possible to […]

ABSTRACT – The experiment was conducted to evaluate the animal production and the economic result of the mixtures of oat + ryegrass (MOR), triticale + ryegrass (MTR), rye + ryegrass (MRR) in continuous grazing. Beef heifers with seven months of age and initial 140 kg LW were used. The sowing was broadcast at 04/12/96, using 85 kg/ha of oat, 170 kg/ha of triticale, 140 kg/ha of rye and 30 kg/ha of ryegrass, in the respective mixtures. The area was fertilized […]

ABSTRACT – This experiment was conducted in an elephant grass pasture from EMBRAPA/CNPGL to compare methods for estimating forage availability, as well as to evaluate the accuracy of three observers in the evaluations. The cutting, plant height, ground cover and height x ground cover methods, multiple regression analysis and the visual comparative yield were compared with the total productions in respective half of evaluated area. The visual comparative yield method always provided the highest coefficients of determination of estimating equations, […]

ABSTRACT – This experiment was conducted to evaluate the total dry matter (DM) production, leaf/stem ratio, percentage of leaf and stem and nutritive value of the elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) cultivar Roxo under four cutting ages (40, 60, 80 and 100 days) from July of 1994 to December of 1995 in the wet land region of the Paraíba State. The cultivar was stablished in plots of 3,0 x 5,0 m and plant spacing of 0,70 x 0,80 m, using a […]

ABSTRACT – The tissue proportions, the degree of simple linear correlation of this characteristics with the in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) and their chemical composition were determined in transversal sections of the botanical fractions, leaf blades and sheath and stem sampled from the top and bottom tillers of dwarf elefantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schumach cv. Mott, setariagrass (Setaria anceps, Stapf ex Massey cv. Kazungula)) and jaraguagrass (Hyparrhenia rufa, Nees Stapf). The jaraguagrass, with high percentage of parenchyma bundle sheath (PBS) […]

ABSTRACT – The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of a commercial bacterial inoculant containing Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus faecium and Pediococcus acidactili on the quality and dry matter (DM) loss of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) during the ensilage process. The treatments were constituted of two types dual propose sorghum silage harvested at the dough stage: without (control) and with inoculant; three positions in each silo (front, middle and back regions) corresponding to three periods of collection […]

ABSTRACT – With the objective to increase the germoplasm availability for forage production, 215 accessions of the genus Paspalum collected in different regions and introduced at the Embrapa Southeast – Cattle Research Center, located at the central region of the São Paulo state. These accessions were evaluated and selected based on their yields in the first year, of dry matter from the vegetative development throughout the year and during the period of high and low rain preciptation. The accesses were […]

ABSTRACT – The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the dynamics, forage yield and quality of the mixtures of oat + ryegrass (MOR), triticale + ryegrass (MTR), rye + ryegrass (MRR) in continuous grazing. The area was […]

ABSTRACT – A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of acid soil correction, on the control of the sapé (Imperata brasiliensis), a grass type weed of pasture. A molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora) pasture in a red-yellow latosol, having a high proportion of “sapé” was used. Treatments consisted of five levels of dolomite limestone (0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 t/ha) incorporated by hand using a garden tool to the top 20 cm of soil following a mechanical tillage […]

ABSTRACT – The degree of a simple linear correlation among the in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) and chemical composition of the leaf blades and sheath, and stems, sampled from the top and bottom tillers of dwarf elefantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schumach cv. Mott, setariagrass (Setaria anceps, Stapf ex Massey cv. Kazungula) and jaraguagrass (Hyparrhenia rufa, Nees Stapf), was evaluated. A gradient pattern was observed for IVDMD, crude protein (CP) and cell wall (NDF) along the tiller profiles and difference among […]
