The effects of the monensin supplementation on the ruminal parameters and digestibility were evaluated after 120 days of trial, using 20 Holstein bull calves with average weight and age of 90.8 kg and 80 days, respectively. The treatments were 0, .4, .8 and 1.2 mg of monensin/kg LW. As the monensin levels increased the pH values increased (5.97, 6.14, 6.36, and 6.48), but N-NH3 (45.54, 38.08, 28.39, and 24.17 mg%), acetate (36.55, 33.72, 35.62, and 26.35 mM), butyrate (1.22, 7.27, […]

ABSTRACT – The objective of this work was to evaluate seven non linear functions to describe Guzera male and female growth curves, and their crossbreds (3/4Guzera-1/4Brown Swiss, 1/2Nellore-1/4Brown Swiss-1/4Guzera, 1/2Guzera-1/2Brown Swiss, 1/2Chianina- 1/4Brown Swiss-1/4Guzera, 1/2Caracu-1/2Guzera, 1/2Caracu-1/4Brown Swiss-1/4Guzera) submitted to three levels of supplementation (without, during the dry period and the whole year), to analize and to select one function which presented lower regression deviation, lower residual sum of squares, higher coefficient of determination, lower variation among animal parameters, higher convergence […]

ABSTRACT ¾ The contents of Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Co, Mo and Pb of soil, predominant forage in the pastures and water, were studied in the North and Northwest regions of Rio de Janeiro State, during the dry (June-July) and rainy (December-January) seasons. Samples of soil, forage and water were collected in 12 different points of the regions, in predominant grazing areas, as determined by satellite photograph and according to different soil characteristics. The mineral contents of the sample extracts […]

Effects of monensin supplementation on the performance, the carcass characteristics and the composition and the partial economic analysis, were evaluated in a 120-d trial, using 20 Holstein bulls calves, with average weight and age of 90.8 kg and 80 days, respectively. The treatments consisted on different levels of monensin (0, .4, .8, and 1.2 mg of monensin/kg LW). Results with the increase of the monensin levels were observed for weight gain (1.064, 1.312, 1.372, and 1.252), dry matter intake (4.158, […]

ABSTRACT – The chemical composition and in situ dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of bulky fraction (stall and sheets) degradation of 28 corn hybrids in 1996, and 21 hybrids, in 1997, were studied to establish the correlation among the analyzed factors. From the 21 hybrids selected in 1997, 13 were part of the experiment in 1996. The model for the evaluation of in situ DM degradation kinetics (McDonald, 1981), and the model to analyze the in situ […]

ABSTRACT – The effect of the combination of energy sources (corn or cassava hull) and protein sources (cottonseed meal or yeast + meat and bone meal) in four diets, using corn silage as forage source, on the performance and intake of DM, CP, OM, ME, ADF, NDF, starch, Ca and P, using heifers. The effect of the addition salt or mineralized salt was also evaluated. A total of 28 heifers with average 303 kg LW and 18 months of age, […]

ABSTRACT – The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the substitution of corn by cassava bagasse in the concentrate on dry matter, organic matter and crude protein intake in growing cattle. Sixteen crossbred bulls were allotted to a completely randomized block design, in two periods. Four types of concentrate were tested in association with an ad libitum allowance of oat/ryegrass hay (Avena strigosa, L.; Lolium multiflorum, L.)and an average concentrate supplementation of .83% LW. The concentrates […]

ABSTRACT – This work was conducted to evaluate the effects of different concentrate levels on the voluntary intake and the apparent total and partial digestibilities of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total carbohydrates (TCH), in the rumen and in the intestines. Five rumen and abomasum fistulated Holstein calves, with initial average age of 5.8±0.7 months and initial average of 107.4±11.0 kg LW were allotted to a 5×5 Latin square design (treatment […]

ABSTRACT – This work was conducted to evaluate the effects of different concentrate levels on the parameters of at ruminal fermentation, the apparent, total, ruminal and intestinal N digestibilities, the microbial efficiency and the N balance. Five rumen and abomasum fistulated bull Holstein calves, with an initial average age of 5.8±0.7 months and initial average of 107.4±11.0 kg LW were allotted to a 5×5 Latin square design (treatment x period). The animals were housed in individual stalls and full fed […]

ABSTRACT – The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the substitution of corn by cassava bagasse in concentrate on apparent digestibility, digestible nutrient intakes, average daily gain (ADG) and feed:gain ratio (F:G) in growing cattle. Sixteen cossbred bulls, were allotted to a completely randomized block design and in two periods. Four types of concentrade were tested, in association with an ad libitum allowance of oat/ryegrass hay (Avena strigosa, L.; Lolium multiflorum, L.) and an average concentrate […]
