Twenty-seven growing buffaloes of Mediterranean breed were maintained in feedlot for about 140 days with the objective to evaluate the effects of energy intake on the performance and blood serum concentrations of glucose, total protein and urea. The treatments were constituted of three different levels of energy intake: LE (Low Energy), RE (Required Energy) and HE (High Energy). RE was calculated with 125 kcal/kg0.75/day of metabolizable energy for maintenance; LE with 20% below and HE with 20% above of this […]

The work was conducted to relate the energy availability with the feedstuffs composition obtained form fast and cheap analysis, due to the importance of nutritive value and to the impossibility to measure the available energy of the feedstuffs by simple lab analysis. This work were carried out at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) using as a data source all thesis published at the Animal Science Department that contained the energy of the feeds available considering the total digestible nutrients […]

The objectives of the present study were to characterize nictemeral pattern of ruminal pH and feed behavior of dairy goats fed diets presenting different ratios of roughage:concentrate. Five non pregnant non lactating goats, ruminally cannulated, and averaging 58 kg were used during the five experimental periods. A 5×5 Latin square was used to evaluate five treatments consisted of roughage to concentrate ratio of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 e 20:80. Diets were fed every 6h in order to reduce ruminal pH […]

The present work was carried out to evaluate the effect of diets with different protein sources of ruminal degradability and corn silage prepared with or without the inoculant PIONEER 1174 on animal performance. A factorial experiment was conducted, where the protein sources (meat and bone meal, urea and a mixture of both [50:50]) were combined with two types of silage, composing six treatments. Thirty six 3.5 years old Santa Gertrudis steers were randomly assigned to the treatments. There were no […]

The experiment was carried out with 20 intact Holsteins male calves, average live weight of 75 kg and 76 days old, to evaluate the performance and the economical viability to produce veal calves. The calves were fed diets containing 45, 60, 75 and 90% of concentrate. Diets were composed of coastcross hay, ground corn, soybean meal and mineral mixture, fed ad libitum. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks, with four treatments and five replicates. Before the beginning of […]

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental temperature on the bullfrog performance in the growing phase. Four hundred and fuve frogs, weighing 37,5±1,5 grams, were assigned to a randomized experimental design with three treatments (20,2±0,7°C, 25,1±0,4°C and 30,2±0,5°C), five replicates (boxes) and 27 frogs in each replicate. The experimental period was of 45 days, being ten days for adaptation of the frogs to the installations and the feeding. The daily feeding comprised one commercial ration of trout […]

A laboratory study was carried on the transmission of ultraviolet radiation (UV, 250 to 360 nm wavelength) through the haircoat and the skin of cattle. Fresh samples of skin were measured under a solar simulator, taking account of the pigmentation of hair and skin and the structural characteristics of the haircoat (coat thickness, hair diameter, hair length, angle of the hairs to the skin surface, number of hairs per unit area), which defined the average free path length of a […]

The experiment was carried out with 20 Holstein intact male calves to study the carcass characteristics of these animals fed with diets containing 45, 60, 75 and 90% of concentrate. Diets were composed of coastcross hay, ground corn grain, soybean meal and mineral mixture fed ad libitum. A completely randomized blocks experimental design, with four treatments and five replications, was used. Before the beginning of the experiment, all animals were submitted to the same nursing system. The experimental period was […]

The digestibility of ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose (HCEL) and cellulose (CEL) of a total ration was evaluated. The ration, composed by 44.3% Brachiaria hay, 55% concentrate and 0.7% mineral mixture, was fed to animals of different genetic groups (Gyr, Nellore, Guzera, Santa Gertrudis and Caracu), using total feces collection and internal marker (acid detergent lignin – ADL). The data were analyzed in a completely randomized design, with three replications […]

The influence of the level of forage intake on the degradability of particles of elephant grass in the sections of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of bovines and on some traits of ruminal kinetics was studied. A completely randomized split plot design was used, with twelve treatments in the main plots (a 2×6 factorial, comprising two levels of feeding: restricted – NA1 and unrestricted – NA2, and six slaughter times) and the five sections GIT in the split plots. Thirty-six steers maintained […]
