The objective of this experiment was to study the in vitro effects of the ionophores on ruminal fermentation of amino acids. Rumen fluid of a steer fed an elephant-grass based diet was used in the incubations, with addition of casein hydrolysate, in three treatments (control-C; monensin-M; and lasalocid-L). Inocula were transferred into new tubes, daily and on the 11th day of incubation, tubes from each of the treatments were used to inoculate three new tubes (C, M, L), totalizing nine […]

Forty Nellore bulls, with 240 kg initial live weight (LW), were used. Four were reference bulls, four were fed for maintenance, and the remaining were allotted to eight treatments, with four different concentrate levels in the diets (20, 40, 60, and 80%) and two levels of crude protein (CP) (15 and 18%). The growing phase was evaluated up to 360 kg of LW and the fattening phase, up to 450 kg of LW. Cynodon dactylon (L) Pears. (cv Tyfton 85) […]

Soybean meal (SBM), feather meal (FTM) and treated soybean meal (TSBM) with 0.17% of formaldehyde were used as supplement of sorghum silage to evaluate the effect on intake, performance and nutrient digestibilities with young bulls. Treatment of soybean meal with formaldehyde did not differ from soybean not treated, for all studied parameters. Feather meal supplement presented lower digestibility coefficients for DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF (63.0, 65.5, 61.8, 56.4, and 50.9%, versus 65.1, 67.0, 66.8, 58.5, and 53.6% for […]

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of the supplementation in the transition period between wet and dry seasons (May to September) on the productive performance, dry matter intake (DMI), and ruminal pH and N-ammonia. Supplements with 30% of crude protein, supplied in the level of 3 kg/animal/day and constituted by the following energy sources: corn grain (MILHO), grounded corn ear (MDPS) and wheat bran (FT), were evaluated. In the experiment 1, 15 holstein-zebu steers, with average age […]

The objective of this project was to evaluate the effects of different replacement levels of corn for cassava meal (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, dry matter basis) on the dry matter intake and feed:gain ratio, daily weight gain and levels of blood hematocrit, glucose and urea. Thirty five intact Holstein calves, averaging 80 days old and initial live weight of 80 kg, were allotted to a randomized block design and fed concentrate, ad libitum, to reach the intake of […]

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of lactating Holstein cows fed diet with different replacement levels (0, 12, 24 and 36%) of forage cactus (Opuntia ficus indica Mill) for sorghum silage (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). Eight cows were assigned to a two 4×4 latin square design. Each experimental period lasted 21 days, 14 days for adaptation and 7 days for data collection. The intakes of dry matter (DM) in kg/day, % of live weight (LW) and g/kg0,75, organic […]

The objective of this work was to evaluate the ruminal disappearance and nitrogen intestinal digestibility of 18 concentrate feedstuffs and four grasses, using an in vitro inhibitor with HCL-pepsin-pancreatin solutions and the three-step method. The disappearance of nitrogen compounds of feedstuffs was determined at 0 and 2 hours using 1.875 mg of N incubated on each three vessels. One of the vessels was submitted to intestinal digestion. On the second method, approximately 5 g of samples were incubated, during 16 […]

The experiment was carried out with the objective of determining the daily average intake (DAI) and apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of corn, sorghum and sunflower silages nutrients. The nitrogen balance was also evaluated. Nine castrated, male sheeps, kept in metabolism cages, in a 3 x 3 (three treatments and three periods), latin square design, were used. DAI of dry matter (DM), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and crude protein (CP) of corn silage of sunflower silage did not differ. DAI of […]

This work aimed to demonstrate the application of a computer system (Sistema Viçosa de Formulação de Rações) in the recommendation of feed supplements for beef cattle with 200 and 400 kg of body weight, on different pasture deferring and utilization periods. In order to an animal of 200 kg of body weight achieve 1 kg of daily gain in a pasture deferred in February and used in June or September, or deferred in April and used in June or September, […]

Chemical determinations and kinetics studies of nitrogen compounds of 24 concentrate feedstuffs and 10 grasses were made using the concentrations of soluble nitrogen in TCA and gas production. It was used 200 mL of ruminal fluid and 800 mL of medium for 100 vessels. It was used 1.0 g of trypticase and 0.1 mL of microminerals solution to prepare 400 mL of medium. It was used 0.8 g of ammonium bicarbonate and 7 g of sodium bicarbonate to prepare 200 […]
