The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the quality and nutritive value of marandugrass silages. It was evaluated the followings treatments: T1– forage without treatment (control); T2 – 10% of pelleted citric pulp (CiP); T3 – enzymatic bacterial additive (EBA) (SIL-ALL-C4 of Alltech) applied at 5 g/L of water/t of forage; T4 – Coarse chopped forage wilted for 4 hours under the sun. The grass was harvested with 60 days of regrowth (24% DM). The intake and digestibility evaluations […]

Eighteen lambs averaging initial body weight (BW) of 15 kg were allotted to six groups of three animals (one lamb per diet) and were fed diets with following forage:concentrate ratios (F:C): 1) 40F:60C; 2) 55F:45C; or 3) 70F:30C. Lambs of each group were slaughtered when the animal fed the diet with the highest concentrate level reached 25 kg of BW. Animals were slaughtered after 16 h of fasting (feed and water). After obtaining the slaughter body weight (SBW), animals were […]

Twelve Holstein lactating dairy cows were blocked by days in milk and randomly assigned to three replicated 4 x 4 Latin square to evaluate the effect of different protein sources on intake, nutrient digestibility, and milk production and composition. A basal corn silage diet (60% of the total dry matter) was fed plus one of the following proteins sources (dry matter basis): soybean meal (SBM), cottonseed meal with 38% of crude protein (CSM38), cottonseed meal with 28% of crude protein […]

This research was carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of elephant grass silages, with increasing levels of dehydrated passion fruit by-product (DPFB). Five inclusion levels were studied (0.0, 3.5, 7.0, 10.5, and 14.0%). Twenty castrated male sheep were assigned to a complete randomized design with five treatments (inclusion levels) and four replicates. The intakes of DM (DMI), CP (CPI), NDF (NDFI) and ADF (IADF) were determined, as well as the DM apparent digestibility (DMAD), CP (CPAD), NDF (NDFAD), ADF […]

The objective of this study was to develop and validate a model to estimate the EE apparently digestible fraction from different cattle diets. True digestibility coefficients and metabolic fecal contribution were the main parameters fitted to the model. The estimation method for both parameters was based on the Lucas test. The dataset used to build the model contained 48 and 60 experimental means for lactating cows and growing and finishing cattle, respectively. Data were taken from 24 experiments (12 experiments […]

Thirty-six lactating Holstein cows averaging 258 days in milk were used to study the supplementation of yeast culture (Levucell SC20 – Lallemand) in dairy diets with two starch contents (22 vs. 32%). The lowest starch content was obtained by partial (50:50) replacement of finely ground corn by dried citrus pulp. A replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design was used with four periods of 24 days each. The first 20 days were used for diet adaptation and the last four […]

The true protein digestibility in the small intestine of different ruminant feeds were measured using in situ and in vitro techniques. Two steers with average body weight of 450 kg and fitted with ruminal cannulas were used for in situ incubation of different feeds. The following feedstuffs were evaluated: animal and vegetable protein concentrate, energy concentrate, fiber by-products, and forage. Protein truly digested in the small intestine was estimated by pepsin or pepsin/pancreatin incubation with or without previous ruminal incubation. […]

Twenty crossbred bulls (1/2 and 3/4 Bos taurus x Bos indicus) averaging 24 months of age and 532 kg of body weight at the beginning of the experiment were used. Animals were randomly assigned to five treatments (four replicates/treatment) in a completely randomized design to evaluate the effect of replacing corn grain with a wet byproduct of cassava starch extraction on apparent digestibility of nutrients. Bulls were fed diets containing sorghum silage and one of the following levels of cassava […]

The objective of this trial was to estimate chemical composition, digestibility and ruminal degradation kinetics of silages from four sunflower hybrids: Rumbosol-91 (forage), M-734 (double purpose), C-11 (double purpose) and BRS-191 (grain) sowed in October (early), November (normal) and December (late). A randomized complete block design in a 4 x 3 factorial arrangement (four hybrids x three seeding dates) with three replicates was used. Dry matter values ranged from 23.2 to 43.0%, pH from 4.0 to 5.1, and NH3-N%/TN from […]

Milk fat from 12 7/8 crossbred Holstein-Zebu lactating dairy cows was used to evaluate the effect of different diets on milk fatty acid (FA) profile and milk CLA content. Cows were fed concentrate containing corn (CR), wheat bran (WB), or dried citrus pulp (CP) supplemented or not with soybean oil. Chromatographic analysis showed a FA recovery greater than 95%. With the exception of milk content of trans-10 C18:1 and proportions of trans-10 C18:1 and trans-11 C18:1 on total milk trans– […]
