The objective of this trial was to evaluate the carcass physical composition and meat quality of crossbred cull cows, from the second (G2- 3/4Charolais (C) Nellore (N) and 3/4NC) and third (G3 – 5/8CN and 5/8NC) generations of Charolais – Nellore rotational crossbreeding, feedlot finished and slaughtered at 465, 507 and 566 kg. At the beginning of the experiment, the average age, weight and body condition were, respectively, 8.5 years, 388.6 kg and 2.35 points. The diet, with 48:52 roughage:concentrate […]

The characteristics of the body parts non-integrant of the carcass of 5/8 Nellore 3/8 Charolais steers feedlot finished and slaughtered with 425, 467 and 510 kg, were evaluated. The feeding periods were 30, 65 and 94 days, respectively. The average initial age and weight were 660 days and 361 kg, respectively. The diet, with 60% roughage and 40% concentrate dry matter basis (DM), contained 10.25% of crude protein and 3.18 Mcal of digestible energy/kg DM. According to regression equation estimate, […]

The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of feeding whole goat milk or fermented cow colostrum supplemented or not with soy oil and with or without the growth promoter Zeranol on performance of kid goats. Twenty-four Alpine kid goats assigned to a completely randomized design in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement were used in this trial. The following variables were investigated: weight gain, intakes of dry matter and concentrate, feed conversion, and organ sizes. Significant differences […]

Carcass yield and growth of organs and innards of 40 crossbreed F1 Holstein X Gir calves fed different liquid diets (whole milk or fermented colostrum-based diets), supplemented or not with soy oil (45 mL) and with or without growth promoter Zeranol were evaluated. The animals were daily fed a diet with concentrate (23% crude protein), Tifton hay ad libitum and 3 L of milk or fermented colostrum. The animals were slaughtered at average weight of 57.38 kg and 60 days […]

The objective of this trial was to evaluate the milk yield of cows of two breeding systems, straightbreds Charolais (CH) and Nellore (NE) and, crossbreds F1 ½CH ½NE and ½NE ½CH, submitted to different feeding systems, as well as measure the resultant heterosis. The milk yield was determined at 14, 42, 70 and 90 days, being this last one coincident with weaning. Eighty-six cows were used, and submitted to one of the following feeding systems: NP: cows maintained exclusively on […]

Body weight gain of 103 Nelore calves until 20/21 months old when weaned on cultivated pasture and supplemented during the dry period was evaluated during three years to obtain steers with body weight to be finished immediately at fedlot. At the beginning and end of supplementation period, the animals averaged body weight and age of 189.51± 21.08 kg and 254 ± 29.22 days and 242.38 ± 29.22 kg and 400 ± 31.08 days, respectively. The mean daily feed intake was […]

The productivity of Nelore cows on Brachiaria decumbens Stapf pasture was measured during four years, in a soil initially improved with limestone and fertilizer and with free access to a mineral mixture. Pregnancy rate (PR), calving rate (CR), weaning rate (WR), calves weaning body weight (BWC), productivity (P = kg of calf/cow) and efficiency (E= P/100 kg of cow) per cow, productivity per area (AP = calves kg/ha), as well as cow body weight and body condition before the calving […]

The performance of beef heifers in black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) plus ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pasture was evaluated in this trial. The treatments evaluated were: ‘No Supplement’- animals in black oat plus ryegrass pasture; ‘Increasing’ – animals in black oat plus ryegrass pasture, receiving increasing levels of supplement (wheat bran): 0.3; 0.6; 0.9; 1.2 to 1.5% body weight (BW) during the pasture cycle; ‘Fixed’ – animals in black oat plus ryegrass pasture, fed 0.9% BW of supplement during all […]

This trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different stocking densities on performance of caged layers during the growing and laying periods and to verify the effects in the next phase. In the growing period (0-6 weeks), eight hundred and four chicks (Isa Brown ) were assigned to 100 x 80 x 35 cm cages, according to a completely randomized design, with four treatments (275.86, 250.00, 228.57, and 210.52 cm2 per bird) and four replicates. No significant effects of […]

In the present study the hypothesis that fear of humans is long-lasting and may influence milk production in Holstein cows was tested. One person (the aversive handler) carried out two daily sessions of an aversive treatment during 21 days, where each cow received two slaps on the rump and a strong yell. The control handler walked around the cows not menacing the cows. Flight distance from both handlers was measured before the treatments were imposed and 14 and 180 days […]
