A trial was conduced to evaluate the effects of Tifton hay (Cynodon dactylon) supplemented with multinutrient blocks formulated using different molasses levels on digestibility, intake, and blood urea level. Four Hereford steers, one year old, weighing on average 196 kg in the beginning of the experiment, were assigned to a 4 x 4 latin square. The treatments were: Tifton hay and Tifton hay plus supplementation with either 25, 30, 35, and 40% molasses levels in multinutrient blocks. However, to include […]

The objective of this work was to study DM, NDF, CP and IPND ruminal kinectics of irrigated Tanzaniagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.). Simulated grazed samples were collected on three periods of the year (spring, summer and fall), under three post grazed stubbles intensities (low, medium and high). Three rumen cannulated animals were assigned to a 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine the in situ degradability until 96 hours of incubation. NDF, CP and IPND were determined by NIRS in […]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding alfalfa haylage with microbial inoculat on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition in Holstein cows, at 135 ± 16.4 days in milk. A cross-over design with two periods of sampling was used. Treatments were alfalfa haylage (50.0% DM and 16.5% CP) control or microbially inoculated with Silobac® product (Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus). Each experimental period extended for twenty-one days, the last five used for data collection. […]

The objective of this study was analyze the colour, pH, weight loss by cooking (PPC) and shear force (FC) of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles of Santa Inês (SI x SI) and Texel x Santa Inês (T x SI) lambs, slaughtered at different live weights. Thirteen males and fourteen females were slaughtered at 15, 25, 35 and 45 of live weight. The carcasses were kept during twenty-four hours at 2ºC and during that time the pH was […]

The present work was carried out to evaluate the growth of stomach compartments of early weaned Holstein calves. The animals were fed concentrates and hay from the second and third week of age respectively. Eighteen animals were allotted to a completely randomized design, with three treatments (slaughter age). Six calves were slaughtered at birth, at 50 days at 110 days of age; the stomachs were withdrawn and the weight and volume of each compartment measured. Data were submitted to correlation […]

The objective of this research was to evaluate weights and percentages of some organs in relation to live weight at slaughter (LWS), empty body weight (EBW) and total organs production (TOP) of intact 1/2 Ile de France 1/2 Polwarth male lambs. The lambs were finished in feedlot and fed diets with roughage:concentrate ratios of 50:50 and 30:70 and slaughtered at 30 or 34 kg. Tongue, lungs with trachea, heart, liver, pancreas, thymus, thyroid, adrenal, kidneys, testicles, spleen, diaphragm, bladder, penis […]

Thity-six lambs, 12 crossbred Texel x Bergamácia (TB), 12 crossbred Texel x Santa Inês (TS) and 12 purebred Santa Inês (SI) lambs were individually finished in fedlot for 50 days (from 130 to 180 days of age). Each genetic group consisted of six males and six females, fed three different diets: 1 = without coffee hulls (control); 2 = with in nature coffee hulls; 3 = with treated coffee hull with urea and grounded soybean grain. The animals were slaughtered […]

The work was carried out to evaluate the body composition and the net requirements of protein and energy for weight gain of dairy calves in the beginning of the productive life were determined. Eighteen Holstein bulls calves at newly born to 110 days of age weighing between 30 and 100 kg were used. Six animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment (to birth) and other twelve animals were full fed until a pre-established slaughter of age. Six animals […]

The study was carried out at the Animal Production Department of the Universidade Federal of Santa Maria-RS, to evaluate the effect of age on carcass characteristics and composition of carcass regions (forequarter, rib, hindquarter and section 9a-11a ribs) at newly born calves. Eighteen animals distributed in three slaughter age (six at birth, six at 50 days and six at 110 days of age), were used. The quantitative characteristics of slaughter live weight (40.8; 59.7 and 87.0 kg), hot (22.7; 30.9 […]

The objective of this work was to evaluate the ruminal degradation and intestinal and total dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) digestibility of soybean meal, corn grain, dry molasses, fish meal, feather meal and alfalfa hay, by the in situ degradability technique associated to the mobile nylon bag technique. The samples of the feeds were milled and put in nylon bag of 10×5 cm (48 micras) in the amounts of 15 and 5 mg of DM/cm2 for concentrate feeds […]
