The objective of this experiment was to study different levels of energy supplementation on the carcass characteristics of beef cull cows under temporary grazing on cultivated pasture of Lolium multiflorum + X triticosecale. Fourty Charolais cows were divided into four age classes (AC), being: 4 (AC4), 5 and 6 (AC5-6), 7 and 8 (AC7-8) or more than 8 years (AC+8), and randomly alloted into four levels of supplementation (SL): 0, .3, .6 and .9% of live weight. The supplement used […]

The objective of this work was to study the quantitative and qualitative carcass and meat characteristics of Charolais (C) and 3/4 C 1/4 Nellore (N) cull heifers. Twenty-five culled heifers, three years old, were feedlot finished per 80 days period. No significant difference was observed for slaughter weight (473.6 vs. 468.8 kg), cold carcass weight (241.8 vs. 241.8 kg), dressing percentage (51.09 vs. 51.61%), fat thickness (4.13 vs. 4.78 mm), forequarter percentage (35.52 vs. 36.01%), sidecut percentage (15.03 vs. 15.42%), […]

Forty five adult ewes were used, 15 for each of the three breeds: Hampshire Down (HD), Texel (TE) and Ile de France (IF). These animals were measured for rectal temperature (Rt), skin temperature (St), fleece temperature (Ft), temperature of the coat surface (Cst) and respiratory rate (Rr), Air temperature (At), air vapour pressure (Avp), wind speed (Ws), globe temperature (Gt) and radiant heat load (Rhl) were also recorded. The Thermal Comfort Index equation was used: TCI = 0.6678Ta + 0.4969e […]

The work was conducted with the objective to study the allometric growth of the bone, muscular and fat tissues in the left side of growing lamb carcasses. Thirty-six, twenty-four Santa Ines and twelve Bergamacia lambs were used. The animals were kept in individual pens and fed ad libitum diets. The slaughtering was done when the animals reached the live weight of 15, 25, 35 and 45 kg. The amount of the different tissues was obtained through the dissection of the […]

The objective of this trial was to study the effect of three grazing intervals (T30 = 30 days, T36 = 36 days and T45 = 45 days) on milk yield and live weight changes of crossbred Holstein x Zebu cows grazing elephantgrass pasture rotationally managed. The experiment was conducted during the rainy season using 18 crossbred cows averaging 30 days of lactation and 488 kg of average live weight. The cows were allocated to experimental treatments according to a completely […]

An Outdoor Pig Production System (SISCAL), at the Experimental Station Agronomic Institute of Paraná State was used with the objective to determine the establishment and production costs of this system in the Southwestern region of Paraná. The SISCAL area was dimensioned to a 14 sows and one boar herd, which was divided in paddocks to separate the animals per physiological stage (reproduction, gestation and nursery). The establishment cost was based on the labor, material used for the system installation and […]

The experiment evaluated the performance of Charolais (C) and Nellore (N) cows of three age classes, young (3 and 4 years), adult (5 to 7 years) and old (8 or more years), weaned at three (early weaning) or seven months in the fall (traditional weaning). The weight of the cows at the fall was 45 kg higher for the cows weaned at three months (T3) than for the cows weaned at seven months (T7). The body condition at seven months […]

Seventy beef males of three breeding systems (BS), straightbreds Charolais (Ch) and Nellore (Ne), G1 crossbreds: 1/2 Ch + 1/2 Ne (1/2 Ch) and 1/2 Ne + 1/2 Ch (1/2 Ne) and G2 crossbreds: 3/4 Ch + 1/4 Ne (3/4 Ch) and 3/4 Ne + 1/4 Ch (3/4 Ne) were used. The number of animals by genetic group was, respectively, 15, 12, 8, 12, 14 and 9. Thirty-five males were castrated (C) at seven months and 35 were kept intact […]

The chemical composition and the preservation of sugar cane byproducts treated with 0, 1, 2 and 4% (N-ammonia in dry matter) using anhydrous ammonia, urea and ammonia sulfate, on a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design were studied. No alteration was observed in dry matter content of sugar cane bagasse in function of sources of ammonia. The sources of ammonia decreased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of sugar cane bagasse, however; only the ammonia sulfate decreased the NDF of […]

The objective of this trial was to evaluate the biological and economical feeding systems feasibility during critical periods as an alternative to reduce the slaughter ages the animals raised in Brachiaria decumbens pastures. Sixty F1s Angus-Nellore weaned calves were randomly assigned in the following treatments: A) no supplementation; B) supplementation during the dry season after weaning; C) supplementation during the second dry season of the animal’s life; D) supplementation during the both dry seasons; and E) supplementation during the first […]
